What sort of clothing should I wear and what sort of kit do I need for the walks?
Dress for the conditions. Remember the weather can change rapidly, especially on high ground and in winter. As a rough guideline, we recommend the following:
- Good comfortable walking boots or waterproof walking trainers
- Warm clothing with plenty of layers
- Comfortable walking trousers (jeans are not recommended, uncomfortable when wet and take too long to dry)
- Rucksack containing:
- Waterproof jacket
- Waterproof over trousers
- Gloves, hat and scarf
- Packed lunch
- Water (hot drinks are recommended in winter)
- A small first-aid kit for cuts, bites and blisters
- In winter you may wish to consider carrying a torch and a reflective belt
Getting kitted out need not cost a fortune. Your Ramblers membership card may entitle you to a discount in many outdoor shops, it's always worth asking.
